Young Bear With Severe Mange Found In California Digging Through Trash

 A heart-wrenching sight caught the attention of residents in California as they witnessed a hairless creature rummaging through dumpsters in search of food. Concerned for its well-being, they promptly contacted a local rescue group for assistance.

When the rescue group arrived, they were astonished by what they found—a young black bear without fur. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they quickly intervened and coordinated efforts to provide the bear with the care it desperately needed. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife took custody of the bear and then reached out to The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, an affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), to continue its rehabilitation.

Upon closer examination, it was discovered that the bear was suffering from a severe case of mange, a painful skin disease caused by mites. The mange had spread throughout the bear's body, resulting in complete hair loss. It was clear that urgent intervention was required to alleviate the bear's suffering.

The bear, affectionately named Eve, required a sanctuary where she could recover and receive specialized care. On Christmas Eve, two compassionate volunteers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife drove Eve to The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center (FFAWC). The FFAWC team carefully arranged a suitable environment for Eve, considering her extreme case of mange. They had to select bedding and materials that wouldn't further irritate her delicate skin. Moreover, since mange is highly contagious, maintaining a sanitary environment was crucial.

Upon her arrival at FFAWC, Eve was given her own sanctuary where she could begin her journey to recovery. The dedicated staff quickly formed a bond with her, as her resilient spirit touched their hearts. While her road to recovery will be gradual, the FFAWC team remains optimistic that she will make a full recovery. Once she is healed, FFAWC plans to release her back into the wild where she belongs.

In the meantime, Eve is enjoying her sanctuary, relishing in the ample space and the abundance of fresh fruit, particularly apples. In a heartwarming video shared by FFAWC, Eve can be seen carefully selecting each apple and bringing it back to her nest. The volunteers marvel at her diligence and the unique items she chooses to incorporate into her cozy abode.

The FFAWC team provides regular updates on Eve's progress, sharing her daily explorations and the items she playfully incorporates into her nest-building routine. It is evident that Eve's resilient spirit shines through as she adapts to her new environment.
