Abused in the past, this dog shows his gratitude every day by giving countless hugs to his benefactors. Just a few days ago, Sonny's eyes were filled with sadness, but now they sparkle more than ever. This dog has endured terrible suffering in his past and will always be grateful to those who gave him a new chance at life. He has found a touching way to express his thanks...
In March of last year, Sonny arrived at the Jackson County Animal Shelter in the United States. The emaciated dog had left behind a life filled with fear and suffering. "It looked like he was about to give up. You could see the sadness in his eyes," said shelter manager Lydia Sattler to The Dodo.
Sonny had been severely neglected by his previous owners: his claws were too long, his ears had been cut off, and he had tested positive for heartworm disease. Also known as heartworm disease, this cardiopulmonary condition can be fatal if not treated properly.
Despite all these horrors, Sonny was a dog full of love. Day after day, "life came back to his eyes" thanks to the support of volunteers. The quadruped finally seemed to feel safe and began to recover.
"To meet Sonny is to love him"
Grateful for his rescue, Sonny was particularly affectionate towards his benefactors. Every time one of them knelt in front of him, the dog would snuggle into their arms and stay there for as long as possible.
"He wants to hug everyone. He blends into the crowd. It's as if he can't get close enough," Lydia Sattler said. "He is so grateful. I don't know how to explain it, but you can feel it."
Operation Seduction
For a few days, Sonny struggled to get the attention of shelter visitors. Lydia believed that his appearance played a role in this: "He looks bad, but he will get better. His coat will grow back, he will gain weight... his ears will never be normal again, but that's just a detail."
In order to help him find a new family, a good Samaritan paid Sonny's adoption fees. The shelter was also willing to pay 100% of his heartworm treatment to persuade his future owners to adopt him. All he had to do was find his match...
Fortunately, Sonny's greatest wish was granted a few days ago. A man visited him at the shelter and saw all the charm that lay hidden in him. He chose to give him a fresh start. In return, Sonny promises to shower him with hugs for the rest of his life!
